MAEF recently received a $10,000 grant from MGPUB to help improve technology on the mobile science labs by outfitting them with interactive whiteboards and individual student response systems. Interactive whiteboards operate as part of a system that includes the whiteboard, a computer and a projector. Whiteboards accept touch input from a finger or a pen tool on the projected desktop image. The individual student response systems are another form of advanced technology that uses a computer and projector. Students participate by selecting answers they believe to be correct on a wireless keypad. The response system then collects the results and displays the aggregated data for all to see. This new, up-to-date technology will allow MAEF to provide state-of-the-art lessons and teaching techniques for schools systems and students in Maryland. | | Each issue of MAEF's Flash News will highlight an organization or individual who demonstrates exceptional support of agriculture in education. Lori Mayhew makes Ag interesting and accessible! By combining the unique properties of the MYcaert lesson libraries and E-Units, Mayhew makes lessons interesting and accessible to her Damascus High School students. Her enthusiastic use of technology provides her students the only opportunity at Damascus to prepare for similar learning practices required in colleges. E-Units, power points and student worksheets are posted on Ed-Line, the school system's learning community management technology. Students can retrieve these materials along with class and teacher notes anywhere they have access to the web. Missing class due to illness or vacation has less of a potential impact for students. Parents and tutors can also view the lessons and assist students with their class work. Mayhew also uses Exam-View Testing software that delivers tests, quizzes and class assignments to students electronically via the web. The assignments are scored immediately and students are able to see results quickly. "I receive a copy of responses and scores as an e-mail," says Mayhew. "This eliminates the grading step for selected response test items. The essays are graded by hand." CAERT is the Center for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Training, Inc. CAERT's mission is to develop materials and training that support science-based instruction in all areas of agricultural and environmental education. CAERT specializes in developing curriculum that meets local and national learning standards in the science and math areas. All curriculums are produced in a user friendly format that makes it attractive to both teachers and students. "It makes for a very efficient classroom," says Mayhew. For her outstanding efforts to advance agriculture in education with technology in her Montgomery County classroom we recognize Lori Mayhew. | | Elementary Teachers Take Note! MAEF is pleased to announce that graduate credits are available through McDaniel College for this summer's teacher training workshop. This expands the types of credits that can be earned through the workshop. Currently, participants can earn MSDE credits. In some cases, college credits are more readily reimbursed through Boards of Education. Teachers should invesitigate reimbursement policies in their school systems For additional information and a registration form, visit our website or call Jeanne at 410-848-4745. The 2009 Elementary Ag in the Classroom Workshop will be held June 21-25, 2009 in Westminster. | | Ag in the City! Candy camo and soy! Two groups of fifth-graders at Montebello Elementary/Middle School were taught two very important agricultural lessons through the Ag Returns to the City outreach program. The first group of students learned the importance of animal camouflage by participating in the Candy Camouflage lesson. Students partner to tally M&M's hidden among candy corn candies and graph the results. Graphing is and important skill for the Maryland State Assessment test that the students will be taking this spring. During the All About Soy lesson, the second group of fifth-graders learned just how important the soy bean is to their lives. Students learn the anatomy through the dissection of a soy bean and sample many different soy products. The class participated in a demonstration of the making of lip balm from soy and bees wax. Duck, duck.....CHICKEN! Normally teachers prevent students from making animal sounds during class. But the Kindergarten and first-graders at Francis Scott Key Technology Magnet School were encouraged to do just that during an exciting lesson about chickens and sound. A simple plastic cup and a piece of string were converted into a "chicken" to explain the science of sound. Throughout the lesson, the students were taught facts about chickens and discovered the important role chickens play in Maryland's economy. | | 2009 Urban Youth Garden Grants as part of the Ag Returns to the City Program and the Edible Classroom. The women will engage in a variety of hands-on lessons presented by MAEF's Elementary and Middle School Directors.
