20th Anniversary Banquet & Auction

 

 20 Years

MAEF celebrated 20 years at its Annual Banquet and Auction on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008 at Michael's Eighth Avenue, Glen Burnie.

 

Over 200 supporters came together for a night of celebration.  Guests were treated to an evening of good food, fun and a timeline presentation of the past 20 years of MAEF's achievements.

 

Auction items included hunting trips,vacation stays and a NASCAR driving expercience.

 

Thanks to everyone for your participation, contributions and generous bidding.

 
Awards were given to Jean Knill, Laurie Adelhardt, Alan Knotts and Michael's Eighth Avenue for their service to MAEF over the past 20 years.

 

Representatives from the Maryland Geographic Alliance and the Delmarva Farmer were on hand to present generous checks supporting MAEF programs.

Ag Advocate

 

Each issue of MAEF's Flash News will highlight an organization or individual who demonstrates exceptional support of agriculture in education.   

 

This month's Ag Ed Advocate is the Marlyand Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) for supporting MAEF and FFA.  MNLA has also helped integrate the Certified Professional Horticulturist (CPH) industry certificate into high school programs. 


Since 1931, the MNLA has existed to support, promote, and provide services and assistance to member businesses.  They support all constituent groups of the horticulture industry, including landscape, garden centers, interiorscape, grounds maintenance, nursery, greenhouse, arboriculture, botanical gardens and other allied businesses.  The MNLA also provides a unified voice of the industry, communicating to the public the vital role of the green industry in improving the quality of life.

MNLA members, over 350 strong, enjoy the benefits of quality continuing education programs, publications, the Certified Professional Horticulturist Program, access to a professional lobbyist, and much more.

 

Ag Returns to the City

 

2008 Golf 1st placeAg Returns to the City presented a workshop using agriculture in teaching Social Studies to William's Fitzhugh's graduate/undergraduate class at UMBC. Students learned about Maryland's Ag commodities, the Maryland Digital Atlas, Take Me Out to the Cornfield and many other hands-on activities.  
  

Ag Returns also presented three workshops at Dr. Rayner Browne Academy about various careers in agriculture as part of the school's Career Mini-ice creamworkshop. During the first week, students learned about the diary industry and then were given the opportunity to produced their own ice cream. In week two, students learned how food moves from the farm to the store.  They then used this new found knowledge to produced a fruit parfait. For week three, students learned about soil and turf and produced a Halloween Grow-A-Head to take home and share with family and friends.
  
PondPatterson Park Public Charter School recently held a Service Day where 5th-grade students learned about pond restoration. Students slipped on waders and and got knee-deep in the Patterson Park Boat Lake.  The day was spent cleaning invasive algae from the lake. Students also removed trash and invasive plants from the marsh and lake banks in an effort to clean up the area.
