Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Roger Richardson and guest speaker Dr. Colien Hefferan. Photo Courtesy of the Delmarva Farmer The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation marked its 20th Anniversary with a Gala May 15, 2008 at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Stevensville Maryland. Before the program started, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour that offered a chance to mingle, walk to the water, browse the MAEF displays or sit on the patio to watch the sun set over the Bay Bridge. The 160 guests were then treated to a sumptuous dinner of filet mignon and crab cake while a trio of jazz musicians played in the background. Thanks to Gary Mangum, nine special guests were treated to a pre-Gala cocktail cruise on the Chesepeake Bay. The guests enjoyed cocktails and hot appetizers while enjoying an evening on the Bay. Once the dishes were cleared away, Master of Ceremonies David A. Miller warmed the crowd up with a few well received jokes and surprised a few of the Founders of the Foundation by inviting them up to reminisce about MAEF through the years. Martha Clark, Richard Price and Dr. Ronald J. Seibel, all still active members of the Board, painted pictures for the guests of MAEF in the beginning. They each shared their personal memories and stories of how the organization has grown over the years. The featured guest speaker, Dr. Colien Hefferan, told the guests some her experiences working in the agricultural field and how the current times might be beneficial to MAEF and agriculture in education. Dr. Hefferan is administrator for the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service at USDA . Thank you to all of our guests, speakers and sponsors for making the MAEF 20th Anniversary Gala a success. MAEF would like to offer an apology for the omission of the Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative as a Bronze Sponsor in the Gala program. And, if you could not attend the Gala, the Nov. 6, 2008 MAEF Annual Dinner and Auction will also be a celebration of the past 20 years of MAEF. June's Ag Ed Advocate is the Baltimore County Farm Bureau. BCFB has been a very positive influence and force for the programs in the Hereford school district and throughout the county. They are perennial sponsors of the Hereford Jr. Farm Fair. They also purchased the first Mobile Agriculture Science Laboratory (MASL) for Baltimore County that extends agricultural education to all of the middle schools in the County. Recently, BCFB has contributed $30,000 toward the purchase and exterior graphics on the new replacement MASL. They have also committed $10,000 for the upgrade of the Hereford Middle School Computer Ag Lab. Hereford Middle School is the only middle school in the state with an agriculture curriculum. The BCFB also sponsors the MAEF lab visit at St. James Academy each year. The farm bureau members have also been instrumental in helping re-invigorate the Ag programs at Hereford High School and provide leadership for the new Baltimore County Center for Maryland Agriculture. We are proud to recognize President Keith Wills and the members of the Baltimore County Farm Bureau for their extraordinary support. | | Goats in the Classroom Visits 2 New Schools in May! Goats visited the Kindergarten through 3rd grade classes at Sharp-Leadenhall Elementary School in Baltimore City and Oakdale Middle School in Ijamsville. The new Middle School Program, Goats in the Classroom, is a literacy lesson that incorporates live goats. Sharp Leadenhall Elementary School None of the elementary students at Sharp Leadenhall had seen or touched a goat before and were excited by the opportunity. The students were read the The Three Billy Goats Gruff and were able to act out the story with puppets. They also heard the story, Just a Friendly Old Troll (the troll's point of view) and made a paper bag puppet of a goat or a troll. The most thrilling part of the day was the chance to meet live goats. One teacher made the comment that, "this is an experience they will never forget." The art teacher, Elisabeth Gambino, stated, "Our students LOVED the goats in the classroom lesson and it did a wonderful job of covering reading standards while staying interactive, arts-integrated and including real animals! It was just fantastic." Thank you volunteer Mary Anne Smith for bringing the goats and educating the students on the importance of goats. Oakdale Middle School Nine students from two Frederick County FFA Chapters worked together to pilot a Middle School Goats in the Classroom lesson to 38 Oakdale Middle School students. After listening to The Goat Lady, students were divided to rotate between three stations. The first station consisted of sampling products from goats (lotion, yogurt, cheese and milk) and making lemon goat cheese. The second station informed the middle school students about the value of FFA and the activities of the Linganore Chapter. The third station gave the students the chance to interact with two adorable one week-old Saanen goat kids. Thank you Kelsey Fogle for allowing your goat kids to meet the Oakdale Middle School students. The final lesson for 3rd-5th grade will be piloted soon. This lesson is based upon the story of Beatrice's Goat. Do you know of a school that would like a visit from a few goats?
